Fermentation Associate

We are seeking an enthusiastic Fermentation Associate to join our growing team. You will work in the Process Development Team, responsible for the development and optimization of fermentation processes. You will focus on the practical work: you will set-up and operate equipment and make the necessary preparations to run successful fermentations in collaboration with the team. In addition, you will take responsibility in general lab tasks and use equipment in a safe and responsible way.

Your Profile

Education

•  A BSc in Microbiology, Biotechnology or similar;

Experience/knowledge

•   Ideally, you have hands-on experience with fermentation technology, but candidates with strong interest, the right mindset and the will to learn are also considered;

•  You have experience in writing, optimizing, and following complicated protocols and SOPs;

• Knowledgeof English is very important since we have several international colleagues.

•  Experience with fermentation process development is a plus;

Personality

•  You are interested in R&D, innovation, and the development of novel biotechnological processes and have a critical scientific viewpoint;

•  You can work independently and flexible, but are a team player and able to collaborate with other scientists on the development of new production processes;

•  You are willing to learn new techniques and expand your knowledge;

•  You are capable to manage multiple experiments within a single day;

•  You are reliable, punctual and flexible: you have an eye for detail, work accurately and aim for qualitative work.

Responsibilities

  • You will run fermentation processes and be part of the Process Development Team, reporting to the Teamlead;
  • You will prepare and execute fermentation experiments: set-up of bioreactors, making media, preparing inoculum, sampling and monitoring of the process parameters. After the execution, you will also follow up on sample analysis;
  • Ideally you analyze the experimental results and report them to the team and teamlead. Next, you formulate conclusions and propose follow up experiments;
  • You will also take general lab tasks in the fermentation lab, together with the team (e.g. ordering products, refilling consumables or making solutions);
  • An important task is to maintain the fermentation equipment, follow up on repairs, calibrating probes, etc;
  • You will suggest improvements of lab protocols and practices;
  • You will maintain safe practices and work environment, maintain and handle the lab equipment correctly, and take responsibility in the lab (material management, order, safety,…).

You will assist the teamlead in translating long term goals into day-to-day experiments. You will guide, mentor and train colleagues in their daily operations and data analysis. This will be hand-on, meaning that you will also set-up and operate the equipment, analyse the data, and propose strategies to further improve the process. You will report your results internally and assist in the preparation of technology transfer documentation for external partners. In addition, you will take responsibility in general lab tasks and use equipment in a safe and responsible way.
