We are seeking an experienced Downsteam processing Scientist with a strong background to join our growing team. You will work in the Process Development Team, responsible for the development and optimization of production processes based on precision fermentation, ready for scale-up. Your work will focus on the purification of the target products from the fermentation broth. You will design, develop and optimize these purification processes and provide crucial information for the upscaling. You will assist the teamlead in translating long term goals into day-to-day experiments. You will guide, mentor and train colleagues in their daily operations and data analysis. This will be hand-on, meaning that you will also set-up and operate the equipment, analyse the data, and propose strategies to further improve the process. You will report your results internally and assist in the preparation of technology transfer documentation for external partners. In addition, you will take responsibility in general lab tasks and use equipment in a safe and responsible way.
R&D
• A BSc, MSc or PhD in bio-engineering, chemistry or similar, preferably with a specialty in biotechnological process development;
• You have extensive hands-on experience with downstream processing technology (filtrations, chromatography, drying processes, etc), preferably more than 5 years;
• Experience in development and optimisation of DSP processes and understanding of bioprocess upscaling is a plus;
• You have experience in DOE, data processing, data visualisation and statistical methods, preferably using R or similar;
• Interested in R&D and the development of novel biotechnical processes for industrial scale;
• Experience in mentoring and training of colleagues is a plus;
• Experience in writing, optimizing, and following complicated protocols and SOPs;
• You are fluent in English.
• You have a critical scientific viewpoint and love analytical thinking;
• You can work independently and flexible, but are a team player and are able to collaborate with other scientists on the development of new production processes;
• You are willing to learn new techniques and expand your knowledge;
• You have an eye for detail, work accurately and aim for qualitative work;

• You will assist the Process Development teamlead (to whom you report) in translating long term goals into day-to-day experiments which will be performed by you and your colleagues;
• Identify complex scientific and/or technical challenges within existing DSP processes;
• Design and plan research projects, defining priorities and allocating tasks within a team
• Analyse, interpret, and report research results using clear data visualisation and reporting tools combining data from different experiments. You will compare the results with the project goals, historical data and literature;
• You will conduct advanced experiments and scientific investigations in the lab or field
• Develop and optimise new or existing technologies and methodologies;
• You will share results through internal presentations with a high level storytelling and broad knowledge of the project;
• Collaborate across departments and with external partners to ensure alignment and innovation;
• With your experience, you will guide, mentor and train colleagues in their daily operations and data analysis;
• You will run downstream processing experiments and be part of our production Process Development Team;
• Prepare experiments for scale-up of production processes and prepare products for downstream processing development;
• Keep up to date on scientific trends and integrate new knowledge into ongoing projects;
• Maintenance & correct handling of the lab equipment;
• You will maintain safe practices and work environment;
• Taking responsibility in the lab (material management, order, safety...).
